Memantine HCl
Indications/Uses
Moderate to severe Alzheimer's type dementia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Usual dose: 20 mg/day. Initial: 5 mg once daily. Dosage titration: Increase in 5 mg increments to 10 mg/day (5 mg bid), 15 mg/day (5 & 10 mg as separate doses), & 20 mg/day (10 mg bid). The min recommended interval between dose increases 1 wk. Severe renal impairment (CrCl 5-29 mL/min) 5 mg bid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Patients w/ seizure disorder. Conditions that may raise urine pH. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, confusion, headache, constipation, cough, HTN, back pain, hallucination, pain, somnolence, vomiting, dyspnea, & fatigue.
Drug Interactions
Decreased clearance w/ alkalinizing agents that increase urine pH (eg, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, Na bicarbonate). Concomitant use w/ other noncompetitive NMDA antagonists (eg, amantadine, ketamine, dextromethorphan).
